Packing & Labor

Packing For Your Hospital Visit

Many expectant mothers pack a few weeks before their baby is due. Include nightgowns, slippers, bras and toiletries. Don't forget to pack clothes for your baby to wear when you take him or her home. If you plan to breastfeed, remember to pack nursing gowns and nursing bras. Many moms like the comfort of extra pillows from home, as well as other personal items. Please be sure to leave your valuables including jewelry at home. We cannot be held responsible for their protection.

When You Are in LaborWhen You Are In Labor

If you think you may be in labor, if your water begins to leak or if it breaks, call your doctor immediately. When you enter the hospital through the maternity entrance, proceed to the admissions office where you will be escorted to the Labor and Delivery area to be examined. If it is determined that you are in labor, you'll be admitted to the hospital to have your baby.

Visitors are limited in the labor unit. The husband or significant other (1 person) may be present for vaginal deliveries. Other visitors will be limited based on current or seasonal restrictions.  Children, including siblings, are not allowed in the labor and delivery area.

Scheduled Cesarean Deliveries

Cesarean patients are admitted through the maternity admissions office. You will be scheduled by appointment with the pre-admission testing department before your admission to the hospital. The testing center is located on the second floor of the main hospital.

Drive Home SafelyDrive Home Safely

Your baby's health is our first priority. According to Georgia State Law, all infants must ride in a federally approved car seat. Don't forget to bring it for baby's first ride home.

Classes & Touring

Prenatal Classes

Coliseum Medical Centers offers free prenatal classes to address an expectant parent’s questions and concerns about pregnancy and delivery. These classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and are conveniently held at the hospital. Classes fill quickly; please request a registration packet early in your pregnancy. Mothers should register for classes at approximately 28-30 weeks of pregnancy.

Request a prenatal class packet by calling (478) 765-4502 or under the Community Calendar’s Prenatal Classes link. You may register for classes by phone, fax or email.  There is no charge for any of the prenatal classes.

Prepared Childbirth Classes

These classes cover all aspects of third trimester pregnancy, labor and delivery and the postpartum period. Educators discuss diet, exercise, relaxation techniques, vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery, medications, medical interventions, etc… A tour of the Family Ties Birthing Center is included. Patients will attend two 3-hour evening classes.

Touring The Hospital

We encourage all expectant families to tour the maternity unit before the birth of their baby. This will help you become familiar with our facilities so you'll know exactly where to go and what to do.

For While You Are Here

Mother-Baby Bonding

Rooming-in allows you time to get to know your child before heading home. If this is your first child, you may need help changing and bathing your baby until you feel comfortable doing it alone. Let us know about your questions and concerns.

Lactation Services

If you are planning on breastfeeding, our certified lactation nurse is available to assist you. First-time mothers sometimes need help learning about breastfeeding techniques and cues from the baby.

Call our lactation nurse at 765-4502 to learn more about breastfeeding services offered.

Visitation

Your family and friends are an important part of your new baby’s life. We do ask that patients and visitors follow some hospital rules in regards to visitation. Visiting hours are posted throughout Family Ties Birthing Center and may include seasonal restrictions. This ensures that our staff can give you and your baby the best possible care.

Your Baby's Doctor

Your Baby's Doctor

You will need to choose a doctor for your child before you give birth. You should inform the staff of your choice when you are admitted. Many doctors require an office visit before the child is born to discuss your medical history and care for your baby. Your doctor will also examine the baby within a few hours of birth, discuss your baby's care and let you know when to schedule the next office visit.

Parents of baby boys often choose to have their sons circumcised. You are urged to discuss this procedure with your doctor to learn the advantages and disadvantages, as well as the cost.

Financial Arrangements

Family Ties Birthing Center offers pre-admission forms to make admission easy and hassle-free. The forms are available at your doctor's office, the admissions office, or at any of our prenatal education classes.

You can also call us at (478) 765-4133 and we'll mail you a form. Having the form on file will speed up admission when you check in.

Costs will vary according to the services you receive and the length of your visit. Room charges include the use of hospital equipment, meals, laundry, administrative costs, medical records, housekeeping services and 24-hour nursing care. You will receive separate bills for anesthesia, x-rays and physical therapy. There will also be separate bills from your baby's doctor, your own doctor, and other specialists who may consult on your case.

To get an estimated cost for your stay, call our business office at (478) 765-4133.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

There are times when infants require intensive care nursing services. Although families may not be prepared for this situation, we are. We provide a level III NICU with a board certified neonatalogist to care for infants. Our nursery staff is trained to help families who go through this experience.
